Out Of The Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture
June 11th, 2013
Sneakers have come a long way. In their hundred-plus year history, they've gone from primitive pieces of athletic equipment to status symbols in all cultures. They’ve seamlessly become staples in our day-to-day and impacted everything from sports to retail to entertainment.

Elisabeth Semmelhack, Senior Curator at the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto, has developed a new exhibition, the first show ever in North America to take on the complex history of the sneaker entitled: Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture. (Open Now til March 30th, 2014)

The exhibition features more than 130 early, rare and contemporary sneakers while chronicling the birth and innovation of rubber footwear. In 1839, the process of vulcanization, named after the Roman god of fire, was discovered where rubber was made less sticky and more elastic through the use of sulphur and heat. Bill Bowerman, Olympic-level track coach and Nike co-founder, who innovated nylon uppers and cushioned insoles, is represented by the Nike Waffle Trainer, 1974, for which he created a rubber sole in a waffle-maker; to create built in traction while making the rubber thinner and lighter.
Out of the Box has a major focus on the historic men and companies that have gotten the sneaker to its current status as the go-to footwear. But according to Semmelhack, there were two major collaborations that shifted the social consciousness and began a major boom in the globalization of contemporary sneaker culture: Michael Jordan signing his Nike contract in 1985 and RUN D.M.C., becoming the first hop-hop artists to sign a sneaker contract in 1986. These moments solidified sneakers in the entertainment industry, while opening the door for men to explore alternative fashionable footwear that was affordable and cool.

Tracy Anderson Flagship Studio Opening in Brentwood, California
April 4th 2013

On March 18th, 2013, I recevied an email in my inbox from Gwyneth Paltrow. Now at first, I thought it was spam to be completely honest. However, it was REAL. You see... I have been following Gwyneth's lifestyle blog, GOOP, since its conception. It shares all aspects of lifestyle that Gwyneth holds dear. She has grown it to incorporate her "Things to DO" when you are in the cities she loves from around world. She has also included the expertise and sassy persepectives of friends that share the same zest for life that she does. These people include, Laren Santo Domingo, Max Greenfield, Elizabeth Saltzman and Windor Smith. You can see how on GOOP's Pinterest page by clicking here.
Through GOOP, I have been introduced and remaining abreast of Tracy Anderson's programs. Tracy Anderson is a dear friend, fitness trainer and business partner of Gwyneth. Tracy's fitness programs have been changing the lives and bodies of women around the world. Tracy EMPOWERS Women through fitness. Click here to learn how.
I met Tracy in the Autumn of 2011, when GEOF was providing media coverage of the Clinton Foundation's Decade of Difference Gala. Please click and scroll down to read more about this event by clicking here.

On Thursday April 4th, 2013, my husband Jamie and I joined Gwyneth Paltrow in the celebration of her friend Tracy Anderson and the opening of her flagship studio in Brentwood, CA.

It was an amazing night. To the yummy VEEV cocktails and pink champagne to the music and fabulous people. Celebrating a woman that EMPOWERS women around the world through fitness, makes for a very FUN NIGHT!!!!!!!!! Check out how fun it was through these photos:

Letter From The Editor

Across the nation the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King is being celebrated to commemorate his life, legacy and dream of one day living in equality. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the famous “I Have a Dream” speech. Who can forget that there was a time in our nation that it was too fanatical for a black man to even have dream? Despite history’s agonizing pain, it cannot be reversed or undone, but if we choose to face our futures with dignity, grace and courage, we will never repeat it.
I have always been a radical child with strong convictions and extreme principles. This often times got me into a lot of trouble at home. Courage is my fortress and I have stood between the lines of audacity and hope with my back curved to fear to fight for causes and issues I believed in. People will often forget your name and sometimes forget things that you may have said, but they can never forget your actions. I learned early on that if you don’t like something, change it.
American has been through overwhelming cataclysm. In 1776, she climbed out of the foxhole with her independence in hand. In 1863 she issued the Emancipation Proclamation to all Executive branches freeing men and women bound to infinite servitude. She surmounted ungodly wars, the assassinations of prolific leaders and presidents. She resisted and surrendered to the Civil rights movement, and integration. She has survived terroristic attacks; she has crawled out of two recessions and annihilated our greatest enemies. As the smoke clears, her banner yet waves its broad stripes and bright stars giving proof America is still the greatest nation known to man. She is a surrogate mother to millions of immigrants. She is the land of the free and gives birth to the brave. It has been 150 years since the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Although change has come achingly slow and sometimes with less than perfect outcomes, no one can deny that a two-term Black president is America’s greatest significance to change. Maya Angelou said it best, “All great achievements require time”.
As we turn another page in history, we should not live our lives as if we were entitled to yesterday’s grace or we are guaranteed tomorrow’s mercy. The idea is to sing the songs of harmony, equality, and forgiveness and let it be the soundtrack of our lives every day. We must let the rhythm of love get into our bones and dance its way to our hearts. Dr. King says we must transform our nation from the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood. His efforts for change were perpetually met with distaste and belligerence, and he suffered many defeats. He was not defeated. Dr. King had a single dream of having equal liberties for all that transformed into a million realities.
If we continue to allow ignorance to make us believe that we can live in solitary confinement and survive the blunders of life without the love and kinship of our brothers and sisters, no matter the race, religion, creed or sexual origin, this is how we finally die as a collective. I call on the spirits of my ancestors everyday to always keep me in abundance of their strength, power and unwavering courage.
Martin Luther King Day is not a day off, but a day on. I use my life as an opportunity to follow in the footsteps of my heroes and she-roes of my anestrous lineage by giving back, sharing love or simply a smile. This day is especially sweet for me because my son Tre’von Harris celebrates his life on Martin Luther King Day. Since he was a young child, I have lulled him to bed with stories of why this day is so significant to his culture. As he gets older, I can see more and more pride swelling in his chest like oven-baked dough. He can stand a little taller. He displays more joy in his heart by the way his lips curl at the edges when he smiles. He can laugh a little louder. He is more confident and secure about who he is because he is prodigiously aware of where he comes from. He too can have a dream. Be the change…
