Conscious Consumerism
ABC Home launched "African Happenings" on November 13, 2008. It is a focus initiative to benefit the Global Economy by supporting the conscious consumption of African goods. These goods range from Congolese raffia wraps, indigo textiles from Mali to handmade and sustainable merchandise. The focus initiative is subtitled, "Power to Women: Our most Precious Resource". Five percent of sales will be donated to three organizations, V-day that provides refuge for survivors of War and sexual violence, the Batonga Foundation that provides secondary school and higher education to girls and the Green Belt Movement that is a grassroots organization that began in Kenya to reduce global warming and employs women who plant trees.

As a daughter of Ugandan parents and as a woman , "African Happenings" speaks directly to my heart. And as a citizen of this planet, this holiday season I urge you to spend the money you set aside for gifts, no matter how small, consciously. At times when our budgets have decreased, it becomes so much more important to spend on items that create the most beneficial impact on both our local and extended communities.
"Africa Happening" will continue throughout the holidays. Please refer to www.abchome.com/AfricanHappenings.htm for scheduled educational events and dates.
